NDIS Support Coordinators vs Plan Managers: What’s the Difference?
Two roles that are easy to mix up
If you’ve spent any time navigating the NDIS, you’ve probably come across both “support coordinator” and “plan manager” — and wondered what the difference actually is. You’re not alone. These two roles are probably the most commonly confused in the entire NDIS system.
They’re both there to help you, but they do very different things. Here’s how to tell them apart.
What does a plan manager do?
A plan manager handles the financial side of your NDIS plan. Think of them as your accounts team. Their job is to:
Receive and pay invoices from your providers. Keep track of your budget across each funding category. Make sure claims are submitted correctly to the NDIA. Give you regular statements so you can see where your funding is going. Flag any invoicing errors or issues before they become problems.
A plan manager doesn’t choose your supports for you — that’s not their role. They manage the money side so you don’t have to.
What does a support coordinator do?
A support coordinator helps you understand and use your NDIS plan. Where a plan manager looks after the finances, a support coordinator looks after the practical side of setting up and managing your supports. They can:
Help you find and connect with the right service providers. Assist with setting up service agreements. Work with you on building your capacity and independence. Help you navigate complex situations, like if a support isn’t working out or a provider closes. Prepare you for plan reviews.
Support coordination is funded under Capacity Building in your NDIS plan — and not everyone gets it automatically. It’s usually included for participants who have more complex needs or who are newer to the NDIS.
Can you have both?
Yes — and many participants do. Having both a plan manager and a support coordinator means the financial admin and the day-to-day support coordination are both being handled by people who know what they’re doing, leaving you free to focus on your goals and your life.
They’re separate roles funded separately in your plan, so having one doesn’t reduce your budget for the other.
What about a support coordinator who also does plan management?
Some providers offer both services, but it’s worth being cautious here. The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has flagged conflicts of interest as a concern when the same organisation manages both your supports and your money.
At The Plan Management People, we only do plan management — we’re proudly independent. That means there’s no conflict of interest, and your funding decisions are always made in your best interests, not ours.
A quick summary
Plan Manager: Handles your finances. Pays invoices, tracks your budget, submits claims. Funded under “Improved Life Choices” in your plan.
Support Coordinator: Helps you set up and manage your supports. Connects you with providers, navigates complexity, builds your capacity. Funded under “Support Coordination” in Capacity Building.
Both roles are funded by the NDIS — so neither one costs you anything out of pocket.
