So, how does your NDIS plan actually get managed?
If you’re new to the NDIS — or you’ve been a participant for a while but never really understood your options — you’re not alone. One of the most common questions we hear is: what’s the difference between self-managed, plan-managed, and agency-managed? The good news is it’s not as complicated as it sounds. Each option is just a different way of handling the financial side of your NDIS plan. Here’s what you need to know.Option 1: Agency-Managed (also called NDIA-managed)
With agency-managed funding, the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) handles all your payments directly. Your providers get paid straight from your NDIS funds, and you don’t need to do much admin at all. The catch? You can only use registered NDIS providers. That means if there’s a great local support worker or therapist who isn’t registered with the NDIS, you can’t use your funding to pay them. Best for: People who want a completely hands-off approach and are happy to stick to registered providers only.Option 2: Self-Managed
Self-managing means you’re in charge. You pay providers directly from your NDIS funds, keep records, and submit claims to the NDIA yourself. The big advantage is flexibility — you can hire unregistered providers, which opens up a much wider pool of support workers, therapists, and services. You can also sometimes negotiate better prices. The downside is that it comes with real responsibility. You need to stay on top of your budget, keep receipts, and make sure everything you spend is NDIS-compliant. If that sounds like a lot of work on top of everything else you’ve got going on, it can be. Best for: People who want maximum choice and flexibility, and are comfortable managing money and paperwork.Option 3: Plan-Managed (the best of both worlds)
This is where a registered plan management provider (like us!) handles the financial admin on your behalf. We pay your providers, track your spending, and keep your budget in check — so you don’t have to. But here’s the part people love: you still get the flexibility to use both registered and unregistered providers. That means more choice, without the admin headache. And the best part? Plan management is funded separately by the NDIS — it doesn’t come out of your support budget. It’s essentially a free service.Comparing the three options at a glance
- Agency-Managed: NDIA handles payments. Registered providers only. No admin for you. Less flexibility.
- Self-Managed: You handle everything. Registered and unregistered providers. Maximum flexibility. Requires time and effort.
- Plan-Managed: A plan manager handles payments. Registered and unregistered providers. Great flexibility. No extra cost to you.
